No Solutions — A Sovereign Engineering Podcast

"No solutions; only trade-offs. Walking towards a better internet."

Hosted by Gigi (dergigi — Bitcoin author, Sovereign Engineering co-founder) with Pablo Fernandez (pablof7z — NDK author, SEC co-founder) as co-creator and most frequent guest. Walking dialogues recorded on Madeira with participants of the Sovereign Engineering cohorts — deliberately unpolished, explicitly "we do not have the answers." 37 episodes, Feb 2025 → Aug 2026 and ongoing. The name is Thomas Sowell's line: there are no solutions, only trade-offs.

The show's distribution is itself a Nostr demo: episodes are Nostr events, audio and full SRT transcripts are content-addressed Blossom blobs, RSS at https://sovereignengineering.io/dialogues.xml, no YouTube. It is effectively the primary-source record of how the builder generation after the founding documents thinks — guests include hzrd149 (noStrudel/Blossom), Martti Malmi (Satoshi's first collaborator, Iris), Calle (Cashu), Franzap (Zapstore), Justin Moon, Jeff G (White Noise/MLS), Sandwich (nostr.watch / napplets).

In this folder: episodes.md — full episode table plus deep transcript notes on eight design-relevant episodes and a theme synthesis.

The eight doctrines of the show

  1. There is no global. Global state, usernames, view counts, guaranteed deletion, consistent group state — all unavailable without rebuilding Bitcoin. Design for partial views; resolve names through your graph ("who is Pablo, for me"); make state computable from an inconsistent event swarm. "The eternal September of Nostr is going to be people coming in and building REST APIs that give you global feeds."
  2. Authenticity lives in the data; rug-pull resistance is the killer app. "The authenticity of the data is in the data… the signature is there. That's all that matters" (Pablo). "A server truly is an external dependency… a relay is not, because it can be internal — on my phone, at home — completely exchangeable" (hzrd149/Gigi). For developers: APIs that cannot be revoked, integrations that never need the five-year rebuild — "the permission's gone."
  3. State trade-offs out loud. Mints can rug you — that's the point, keep pocket change in them; encryption above ~20 group members is theater; Zapstore consciously dials decentralization down for credible exit. The diagnosed newbie failure mode: refusing a trade-off and thereby reintroducing a central authority (Passkeys, home servers, global registries, DRM, IPFS's "curse of perfect knowledge").
  4. Local first — with the relay as the unit. Every app should pass the flight-mode test via a local relay; "private doesn't mean on one machine — private means encrypted with your key," while copies live everywhere; the local event cache doubles as the only personalization algorithm they endorse. Censorship resistance, marketed honestly, is "100% uptime."
  5. WoT + zaps = spam defense and realness. The social graph is "the only proper solution to spam" (Malmi — note: he runs it client-side, where fiatjaf wants it relay-side; live disagreement); PoW punishes humans more than spammers; realness is rankable from protocol signals (NIP-05, zaps sent and received, nutzaps-can't-be-faked).
  6. Nostr is the substrate for AI agents. "You need a neutral substrate that has money, identity, cryptography, and web-of-trust baked in" (Pablo). Agents mint npubs, hold NIP-60 wallets, zap the authors of signed knowledge that helped them; AI slop makes signed provenance existential; and there is "a window of opportunity to steer the LLMs… into a freedom-tech direction" (Malmi) — publish your thinking or be absent from the models.
  7. Ship ugly, scratch your own itch, compose small things. The 12-month game of chicken; away from everything-clients toward specialized micro-apps and composable applets ("you should be able to compose your clients" — Sandwich); Nostr as less to build — auth, storage, identity come free.
  8. For people at the edges, on Linux's timeline. Freedom tech serves the deplatformed and KYC-refused first; "wrecked education" converts the rest. "Nostr is the Linux of social media" — win the neckbeards, run everything decades later — and it stays healthy precisely because "you don't make money with protocols."
